Windstorm damage is expensive for insurers and property owners, storm damage claims have exceeded £3.5 billion in the last 15 years alone.

From 1950, three-quarters of natural catastrophe claims have been caused by windstorms and 160 people have died in windstorm events since 1987.

Although the UKs climate is highly variable, windstorms are a frequent feature due to its proximity to the Atlantic. Predicted warmer weather (global warming) is likely to lead to windstorms becoming more frequent leaving many properties vulnerable to damage.

Flooding in Sheffield.A significant number of UK properties face expensive damage from increase in wind speeds and wind storms according to the latest research commissioned by the Association of British Insurers.

5 million roof coverings and chimneystacks are in need of maintenance and properties built prior to 1944 were constructed without a wind-loading architectural standard. These are potentially less capable of withstanding wind damage.

Design standards for new properties also need to be improved to take into account the likely impact of stronger winds. Wind speed is set to increase across the UK by up to 6% and by 10% in Southern England.
